SMJ Performing Company

Born in Canada, Taylor Moved to the United States when she was three years old. She started dancing right away becoming a competitive dancer at age five. She trained and competed for Southern Strut in Irmo, South Carolina. Six years later, she moved and began training at Birmingham Dance Theatre in Alabama. There she met Kim Wolfe as her teacher and mentor. Taylor began assisting at the young age of 12, on the West Coast Dance Explosion Tour.  She traveled all throughout High School to perform in videos, attend conventions, and co-choreograph at various studios around the nation. When Taylor graduated high school, she moved to Los Angeles after signing with Go 2 Talent Agency. She attended Loyola Marymount University with a major in dance; however left after one year to focus on professional dancing. During her last three years in LA, she worked on a children's television show, danced in Ricky Palomino's company for Lifetime viewers, performed in numerous dance shows, taught at a local dance studio and worked the 2016 & 2017 Grammy's as a Talent Credential's assistant for the Red Carpet. Taylor moved to Portland to manage a fitness studio and switch gears from performing to teaching. After 20 years of dancing, it is still her biggest passion. Taylor is proud to direct the company at SMJ and has already been recognized for her award winning choreography the past two seasons. She's known to provide excellent technique and contemporary training but most importantly a very kind spirited human being who puts her students first. Taylor is loved by all of her students, staff and dance industry colleagues.

SMJ's Award-Winning Dance Company

Our mission for Performing Company 2018-2019 is to shift the focus from an abundance of competitive performances to in-studio company work and local performances. Our company will attend fewer conventions/competitions; however, specialty pieces and scholarship holders will have the opportunity to attend additional events. We want to maintain exposure to this dance platform where they’re able to audition, connect with choreographers, meet dancers from around the country, and learn from professional teachers within the workforce.

The exceptional training our staff provides within our versatile curriculum will be of our utmost priority. Our expectations for Company dancers will be 2-3 genres of their choice as well as required, additional training in ballet. We want to showcase these dancers’ talents as well as give back to the community by sharing their passion through movement, story telling, positivity, energy, and connection between one another. We want our dancers to develop professionalism by furthering their education in auditioning, company work, dance terminology, dance history and etiquette.

Company Rehearsals and choreography with staff will take place on Saturdays. During the week, we want our dancers to focus on technique classes and furthering their training. During certain technique classes, we will maintain a rhythm of mixing in all ages and levels to learn performance choreography. Sarah has beautifully structured SMJ to be a place where a student of any age, level, and interest in any style, can jump in and be apart of a learning and loving atmosphere.

We will be moving into a six week summer program this year to advance our students and give them the opportunity to train in a variety of styles. Company Auditions will be held Saturday, August 4th. Following our six week summer schedule, we’ll be having a choreography week to ignite pieces for next year. Master workshops with outside choreographers will be scheduled during this time.
